Congratulations! You’re getting married! You are about to organise the biggest, and of course, happiest, day of your lives together so far.

But where on earth do you start? You are not alone if the thought of planning your day completely fills you with dread.

When the average wedding is priced at £22,000 and takes 300 hours to plan, with a million decisions to be made whilst battling pressure to conform to tradition, it’s not difficult to see why!

The good news is that by following a few simple rules and taking the time to think about what you want from your day before you make any major decisions or purchases, an enjoyable and stress-free planning experience is possible.

Just follow these five simple steps to planning success and you will be well on your way to a perfectly planned day.

Step one: Assess

Think long and hard about what you both want from your wedding. When and where you will get married? How many guests you will invite? How much you will spend? Will you have a theme? What about the honeymoon? Think about what is important to you and where you are happy to compromise.

Step two: Budget

The average expenditure may be £22k but it is just that, an average – not an amount that must be spent.

Do not think that you cannot get married unless you have this amount; the secret is not how much you have but how wisely you spend it.

Work out what funds you already have available and what you can realistically save between now and your wedding day.

Not every penny is needed from the start; payments can be made along the way and final balances won’t be due until a few weeks before.

Step three: Prioritise

What needs organising now and what can wait until later?

Work through your day from start to finish; what do you need to organise to achieve your wedding-day vision?

Many elements will require others to be organised first and nearly everything will depend on your date and venues being known – so put these at the top of your list.

Keep track of your progress and don’t get distracted by elements that can be organised nearer the time.

If your ‘To Do’ list is never ending delegate tasks to your Maid of Honour and Best Man; just remember who you have asked to do what!

Step four: Research

Ok, when we say research, actually, we mean window shop!

Taking the time to compare suppliers will mean you more likely to get a better price and unlikely to come across a better deal later when it is too late.

Use Bridal magazines and the Internet for inspiration. Shop around the internet for things such as wedding favours. Stone coasters are becoming popular favours to hand out to guests

Recreate these ideas yourself and shop around to source what you need at a fraction of the cost.

The bargains are out there, you just have to look – don’t be afraid to haggle.

Step five: File and check

You will have lots of supplier contracts, receipts and important notes to keep safe so get yourself a file or folder so that everything is close to hand and easy to find.

Diarise an hour at the beginning of each month to assess your progress and establish what you have left to arrange.

Go for a coffee with your Maid of Honour and take your file with you – it will make the task seem less like hard work and is a great excuse for a girly chat!

Remember that planning your day is meant to be fun.

It does not have to become a military operation but following these simple rules will save you from a lot of headaches.

You will have a vision to work towards, nothing will be forgotten and hopefully, you will come in under budget – now that can’t be bad!

We bet that you are now raring to go, but before we send you off planning, here are a few words
of advice:

• Be really honest when thinking about what you want; the process will be less stressful and you are more likely to have the day of your dreams.

• Whatever your budget, keep track of what you are spending; think about whether the purchase is necessary or whether you are getting carried away.

• Don’t forget to allow a buffer for unforeseen purchases.

• Go over everything a few weeks before with a fine toothcomb, confirm and re-confirm arrangements with your suppliers. Make sure nothing has been forgotten.

• Create a wedding day itinerary and give a copy to your venue, suppliers and Bridal Party.

• Remember that your wedding is after all only one day and that you have a lifetime of marriage together afterwards. Don’t lose track of the real reason you are getting married.
